What you need

Steps to clean a baby mattress

  1. Remove bedding

Take the sheets and mattress pad off the bed and set them aside to machine wash.

  2. Blot away liquid from spills

If there’s been a urine accident or a baby bottle spill, use cotton wash cloths to absorb as much moisture that seeped through the bedding as you can. This will be easiest to do if the accident just happened.

    Tip

If this is a routine cleaning you can skip this step.

  3. Vacuum the mattress

Use the upholstery attachment to vacuum loose soils off the mattress.

  4. Treat any stains

To remove stains on the mattress, spray a little Clorox® Free & Clear Multi-Surface Spray Cleaner onto a clean cotton wash cloth. Don’t let it get too wet—just a little damp. Use this damp cloth to dab the cleaner onto the stain.

  5. Blot the mattress

Have a second dry washcloth ready to blot the mattress immediately after dabbing on the cleaner to get the cleaning solution back off. Repeat as necessary until the stain is gone.

    Tip

Don’t let the mattress to get too wet as you are working.

  6. Sanitize the mattress

Hold Clorox® Free & Clear Disinfecting Mist 6-8 inches from the surface of the mattress and lightly spray until the surface is wet. Do not saturate.

    Tip

Fabric must remain visibly wet for 2 minutes to sanitize.

  7. Air dry the mattress

While the mattress is air drying, that’s a great time to sanitize bleach-safe bedding with Clorox® Disinfecting Bleach. Baby mattresses with older urine or poopy stains may require Clorox® Urine Remover to help with stain removal.
